South West Suicide Prevention training calendar

The South West Community Alcohol and Drug Service (SWCADS) coordinate suicide prevention training for health professionals and community organisations to improve the support and care available for people affected by suicide and suicide attempts. 

This calendar is collated for the purpose of disseminating information to the South West community.
Please note this calendar may not be exhaustive of all suicide prevention training in the South West.

Training events

These training events are suitable for General Practitioners (GPs), clinicians and other health professionals.  

Val Lishman Health Foundation – GP online training

The program trains GPs to manage suicidal patients. It is accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners as a CPD Accredited Activity until the 2023. Upon completion of the training program, GPs will receive 40 CPD (Continued Professional Development) points in the RACGP CPD 2020-2022 Triennium (Activity Number 186493).

Mental Health First Aid Conversations on Suicide

Blended Online Mental Health First Aid Community Course

Date: 8 and 9 Dec 2020
Venue: Online via e-Learning platform and Zoom
Time:
Course component 1: a self-paced e-Learning component with MHFA (takes 5-7 hours to complete)
Course component 2: 9:00am - 11:30am AWST (2 sessions of 2.5 hours each including setup time). An instructor-led component using Zoom conferencing with practical reflection and group breakouts.
Provider: Wanneroo and Communities Suicide Prevention Network (WACSPN)
Cost: $55 (paid directly to Mental Health First Aid Australia). This course is subsidised by WACSPN saving participants up to $165. Places are limited to a capacity of 12 per group. Includes complimentary membership to WACSPN group and resources.

The Benang Program

Regular training is offered by the Benang Program, which was created to meet the needs of the local Aboriginal community to help address the increasing statistics of Aboriginal youth suicide. The aim of the program is to provide education on suicide prevention to schools and community groups and to provide information on services available to assist individuals and families dealing with mental health issues. SafeTalk

This half-day training in suicide alertness is available to everyone. It helps participants recognise a person with thoughts of suicide and connect them with the resources to help them in choosing to live. Participants don’t need any formal preparation to attend the training—anyone age 15 or older who wants to make a difference can learn the safeTALK steps.
