What is a consumer advisor?
Consumer advisors play a vital role in helping us enhance our services at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital. We are looking for volunteers from diverse backgrounds to collaborate with us in planning, designing and evaluating the care we provide.
As a valued member of our Consumer Partnership Program, you will have the opportunity to contribute and share your feedback in various ways, including:
- joining our Consumer Advisory Group (CAG)
- serving on other hospital committees and advisory groups
- engaging in focus groups
- providing input through review forums for key publications and hospital materials.
Who are we looking for?
We welcome individuals who:
- can share insights from a patient, carer or community perspective beyond their personal experience
- have firsthand experience with our services as a patient, family member or carer
- are passionate about improving the quality and safety of health care
- have strong communication skills and can engage positively with health care professionals
- are 18 years or older.
We are committed to ensuring our consumer advisors reflect the rich diversity of our community. We encourage expressions of interest from:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- individuals with disabilities or those caring for someone with a disability
- people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- members of the LGBTIQA+ community
- young adults.
The majority of our committees run for one to two hours on a quarterly basis, with times and days varying dependent on the committee.
Committees
Mt Lawley Consumer Advisory Group: Quarterly and usually held on a Tuesday. Meeting time is 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
Comprehensive Care Committee: Quarterly and usually held on a Thursday. Meeting time is 11.00am to 12.30pm.
Communicating for Safety Committee: Quarterly and usually held on a Thursday. Meeting time is 1.00pm to 2.30pm.
Aboriginal Advisory Group: Quarterly and usually on a Thursday during business hours.
Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Committee: Quarterly, usually held second week of the month during business hours.
Partnering with Consumers Committee: Quarterly and usually on a Monday. Meeting time is 10.00am to 11.30am.
Each consumer committee member will receive a $37.50 gift card for each committee meeting attended.
Member appointment will be for an initial term of 12 months, unless terminated earlier by and at the discretion of either party upon (one week’s) written notice. Continuation of appointment is contingent on participation according to the Committee’s Terms of Reference. An invitation may be extended to members to serve an additional period.
Sensitive and confidential information which is not in the public domain may sometimes be disclosed to members on a confidential basis as part of committee discussions.
Such information should not be released or disclosed to any person, either during your appointment or following termination, without the prior consent of the chairperson and/or secretary.
If members are unsure about the confidentiality status of information that has been disclosed to them, they should ask the chairperson to clarify the position.
Committee members may discuss in general terms the role and function of the committee, without reference to a specific meeting. Members have a responsibility to advise the chairperson and/or secretary of individual approaches by the media, health providers or any other person seeking information about issues that might be discussed at committee meetings.
