What is telehealth?
Telehealth is term we use to describe health care appointments done over the phone or video instead of face to face.
For your safety and that of our caregivers, St John of God Health Care is now providing telehealth appointments for some services. That way, you’ll still be able to receive the same high-quality health care you are used to, but from the comfort of your own home.
How does it work?
We will let you know if your upcoming appointment can be done over the phone or video. If you choose this option instead of having a face-to-face appointment, we will send you an email with the details of how to connect.
Online appointments are being conducted via a simple and secure system called Webex and can be easily accessed from your smartphone, tablet or computer. If you haven’t used this system before, we recommend preparing in advance of your appointment so you are feeling relaxed and ready to go at the allotted time.
How do I prepare for my online appointment?
What you need
You’ll need a laptop, tablet or smart phone with a front camera, an internet connection, an email address and headphones that connect to your device (for clear audio and to protect your privacy). Don’t forget to make sure your device is fully charged or that you have access to a charger and power point if needed!
Do a test
You’ll receive a step-by-step guide via email showing you how to set up Webex. Do this ahead of your appointment time. You can also do a quick test to check all is in order and understand how your appointment will look and feel. Even though it is easy to use, you may like to have a family member or support person assist you to get set up with Webex.
Get comfortable
If you are using a phone or tablet, choose a spot in your home that is quiet and private, so distractions are limited. The space should also have good lighting.
Prepare the items you’d normally take to a medical appointment
This may include glasses and/or hearing aids, a pen and paper, any notes you would like to refer to, or equipment needed (such as theraband or hand weights for allied health appointments). As with any appointment, you may also like to have a support person with you.
Give yourself time
Aim to be ready 10 minutes ahead of your appointment time, so you can overcome any last-minute technical hitches.
