Intern program:

Our intern program gives you the opportunity to work across multiple specialty areas and gain high quality clinical experience by undertaking rotations across St John of God Midland, Murdoch and Subiaco Hospitals. Our intern program offers outstanding teaching, training and experiences for medical interns across St John of God Midland, Murdoch and Subiaco Hospitals.

With four term rotations per year, you will benefit from enhanced learning experiences from leaders in their medical fields and greater access to leave.

On successful completion of our 12-month intern program, you will receive general registration at the same time as those completing a WA Health internship. In addition, you will have access to RMO rotation streams within St John of God Health Care hospitals.

Core rotations

Core rotations are available in:

  • general medicine
  • general surgery
  • acute aged care
  • emergency medicine.

Non-core rotations

Non-core rotations are available in:

  • intensive care
  • obstetrics and gynaecology
  • paediatrics
  • palliative care
  • stroke/neurology

You can choose one non-core term. However, you can access paediatrics and ICU terms as an RMO, meaning you can get these rotations in year two and beyond.

Interns working in the Emergency Department are required to undertake night shifts. Other departments will include after hours/evening shifts but not night shifts.

GP training opportunities

We are able to offer you a head start to your GP career. The intern program includes a paediatric term, which may be considered as meeting the RACGP vocational paediatric training requirements prior to commencing GP training.

In addition, we have other rotations that you can access through your time with us, including obstetrics and gynaecology (including the RANZCOG certificate and diploma), emergency medicine, intensive care, critical care, psychiatry, internal medicine and many surgical specialties.

Later in your time at St John of God Health Care, you can access GP advanced skills terms.

We offer hospital grand rounds, intern/RMO teaching programs and dedicated departmental teaching. All units deliver bedside teaching and provide opportunities to work closely with consultants.

In 2024 our intern positions available are for rotations at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals, St John of God Murdoch Hospital and St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

All intern applications are run through a centralised program, coordinated by the Post Graduate Medical Council of Western Australia.

We can integrate research into your training. We have dedicated research offices at our hospitals and place great focus on providing research excellence.

Supporting your wellbeing

Continuing your career

On successful completion of your 12-month internship, you receive general registration at the same time as those completing a WA Health internship. You will have access to 12 to 24-month resident medical officer rotation streams within St John of God Health Care hospitals.

Our RMO programs

As a RMO you will have the opportunity to access rotations in general medicine, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, surgery and critical care, including emergency, intensive care and coronary care.

We also offer country rotations for those interested in rural and remote medicine.

RMO opportunities:

A variety of RMO programs are offered at St John of God Bunbury, Midland, Mt Lawley, Murdoch and Subiaco Hospitals.

We offer prevocational programs for junior doctors planning a career in surgery or critical care. Doctors in training learn from and build relationships with experienced consultants by:

  • Rotating across multiple and varied medical and surgical units
  • Attending structured weekly medical education sessions and monthly grand rounds
  • Teaching and mentoring medical students.
You’ll need to have completed your Medical Degree in Australia and have/be eligible for General Registration with AHPRA.

ED Step Up at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals

The ED Step Up program aims to assist senior RMOs both personally and professionally in their six-month term leading up to becoming a registrar.

It consists of:

  • Dedicated tutor/supervisor for each Step Up RMO
  • Fortnightly education in addition to weekly RMO or registrar teaching
  • Procedural skills logbook
  • Curriculum covering situational, leadership and communication skills relevant to a registrar
  • Access to both adult and paediatric simulation teaching
  • Access to Australian College of Education Medicine’s primary examination teaching

Other programs at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals

We can also support you in completing the Sydney Children’s Health Program (SCHP) in the paediatric department or the Certificate of Women’s Health and/or the Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Basic or Advanced DRANZCOG) through the obstetrics and gynaecology departments respectively.

SMART Program (surgery) at St John of God Subiaco Hospital

Our two year Surgically Mentored Applied practice, Research and Training (SMART) program will prepare you for advanced surgical training.

Surgical terms may include general surgery, colorectal surgery, upper GI surgery, plastic surgery and ENT, vascular surgery, urology, gynaecology and gynae-oncological surgery, intensive care medicine and emergency medicine.

We offer surgical registrar positions annually and many of our SMART trainees have progressed to registrar level. In addition to our links to the major public hospitals in Perth, we are also closely aligned with St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals, where a number of SMART trainees have obtained registrar positions.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital has an established reputation in developing basic physician trainees, as a long-term secondment site for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals also offers this training through Royal Perth Hospital.

St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals offers a comprehensive suite of rotations to complete your hospital GP training.

We provide training tailored to meet the needs of pre-vocational doctors wanting to gain entry into Australian General Practice Training as well as those currently in training keen to expand their clinical knowledge and skills.

It is designed to provide the optimal combination of mandatory rotations for community GP readiness and AGPT entry. Additionally, the required first 12 months of hospital training time (including a paediatric term) in the AGPT program can be completed at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals.

We offer a variety of rotations to help establish your career in general practice, including medical and surgical, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, geriatrics and other surgical specialties.

There are also two ongoing 12-month clinical research opportunities for senior resident medical officers - a Clinical Research Fellow: Respiratory Medicine & Oncology and Oncology Research Fellow.
