The 40 finalists interpreted this year’s theme “And then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…” taken from Revelations 21:1-2.

More than 180 works were submitted into the annual Catholic arts award which has been running since 1985 and is Australia’s most significant thematic religious arts prize.

St John of God Health Care Acting Chief Executive Officer John Pease said sponsoring the arts award was a part of the organisation’s commitment to arts and health.

“We are really proud to be able to support the community to participate and enjoy art in a range of ways, including through the Mandorla Art Award,” he said.

“Research shows that art, in its many forms, can lead to improvements in a person’s overall wellbeing which is really important to us as a leading provider of hospital and healthcare services.”

The winning artworks will be announced on Friday, 1 June and all finalists will be exhibited at the Turner Galleries from 2 to 30 June.

A selection of works will then go on display at St John of God Murdoch Hospital.
