Mr Kontoku Shimokawa is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is a Specialist General Surgeon. He has particular interests in oesophago-gastric, bariatric, and hepatobiliary surgeries, and endoscopies.
He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) from the University of Otago and obtained his FRACS through the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was Chief Registrar in his final year. He undertook subspecialty training in the field of Upper GI with ANZGOSA (Australia and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association) where he studied at two major Australian centres for Upper GI surgery, Fremantle Hospital in Perth and Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.
Kon chairs the Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS) Upper Gastrointestinal Multidisciplinary Meetings. He is a current committee member of ANZGOSA where he contributes to policy making and selection of new members to maintain a high standard of surgical quality in Australia and New Zealand. He is also a lecturer at the University of Melbourne Rural Clinical School and is committed to the education and development of medical students in Ballarat.
He has maintained the requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Continuing Professional Development Program, and is credentialed as a General Surgeon with Advanced Scope of Practice in Gastrointestinal Surgery at St John of God Ballarat Hospital.
