Sanj was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Australia with his family when he was young. Sanj grew up in Western Australia then moved to Brisbane to attend the University of Queensland’s medical school. On graduating from the University of Queensland, Sanj continued his basic surgery training in Brisbane.

Sanj relocated to Western Australia in 2006 where he began his advanced general surgery training and obtained his general surgery fellowship in 2010. Sanj moved to the United Kingdom in 2011 to undertake post fellowship training at two of the country’s leading Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery units. He spent twelve months each at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh and the Royal Infirmary Bristol.

In addition to working within his private practice at Upper GI West, Sanj is an Upper Gastrointestinal Consultant and General Surgeon at both Fremantle and Fiona Stanley Hospitals. In addition to Bariatric Surgery, Sanj’s main areas of focus are on diseases of the oesophagus, stomach and gallbladder. These include laparoscopic and reflux surgery, surgery for gallstones, abdominal wall hernias, all aspects of oesophagus & gastric cancer, obesity surgery and endoscopy.
