Gynaecologist Dr Tawfeek explains the importance of accessible, holistic endometriosis care.

Endometriosis is a complex, challenging and common gynaecological condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside of it. The condition affects millions of women worldwide and can cause severe pain and issues with fertility.

For women with advanced endometriosis, the pain can be relentless, significantly impacting their daily lives, relationships, and overall wellbeing. Unfortunately, many women struggle to find the specialised care they need to manage their symptoms effectively.

Recognising this need, we set out to build a service within St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals that not only provides advanced surgical interventions but aims to offer a holistic approach to care.

The service was born out of a deep commitment to improving the quality of life for patients in our local community who endure the debilitating effects of chronic pain caused by this often misunderstood condition.

The advanced surgical endometriosis service was developed with four key objectives in mind:

State-of-the-art surgical techniques

We use advanced surgical techniques that are at the forefront of endometriosis surgical treatment. These techniques allow for more precise removal of endometriotic tissue, reducing the risk of recurrence, minimising the impact on surrounding organs, and improving fertility if required.

Comprehensive, holistic care

The service uses a multidisciplinary team of specialists including a gynaecologist / colorectal surgical team, pain management expert, physiotherapist and counsellors to ensure every aspect of the patient's health is addressed. This holistic approach allows us to tailor treatment plans to the individual needs of each patient, providing them with the best possible outcomes.

Patient-centred approach

We understand every patient’s experience with endometriosis is unique. Our service prioritises patient education, empowering women to make informed decisions about their care and provide ongoing support to ensure they never feel alone in managing their condition.

Community accessibility

By establishing this service locally, we have made it easier for women in the community to access the care they need without the added burden of travel. We have dedicated regular gynaecology-colorectal clinics and surgical lists to accommodate these patients. This accessibility is crucial in ensuring that more women receive timely diagnosis and treatment, reducing the long-term complications associated with untreated endometriosis.

Since its inception, the service has made a significant difference in the lives of many women. Patients who once felt hopeless and isolated in their struggle with chronic pain are now finding relief and reclaiming their lives. It represents a vital step forward in addressing the health care needs of women with advanced endometriosis in our community.

Our future goal is to extend the service and set up a dedicated clinic that provides high quality endometriosis care, offering hope and healing to those who have long suffered in silence.

The advanced surgical endometriosis service is available for women with moderate to severe endometriosis, through both public and private referral pathways at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals.
