Palliative care Pastoral services
At St John of God Murdoch Community Hospice, our commitment to our patients is to provide compassionate and holistic care – the kind of care we would wish for our own loved ones.
To honour this, we set out to learn all about our patients and understand the care they need from us, including their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs.

It is incredibly rewarding to see the uplifting impact that our entire team has on our patients and their loved ones. We provide specialist medical and nursing care, but it is our non-clinical support services that truly enhance their experience under our care.

Happy hour

Recently our Hospice reintroduced ‘Hospice Happy Hour’. On Friday afternoons, when the drinks trolley makes its round, several of our palliative care patients enjoy a glass of beer, cider or wine. It’s just a small way we bring a sense of normality and enjoyment for our patients.

Complementary therapies

For patients and their loved ones, our Footprints Day Centre within our Hospice provides free complementary therapies, such as arts and crafts, reiki, massage and beauty therapy. The arts and crafts sessions are held in small groups. It gives our crafty patients an avenue to have a creative outlet. For us less crafty folk, it’s a nice opportunity to spend time with others in a relaxed environment.

Pastoral care

Our pastoral services caregivers, the true guardian angels of our Hospice, provide free counselling support for our patients and their loved ones. Regardless of culture, faith or spiritual belief, they listen with a respectful ear and work to help patients and loved ones foster hope and courage during some of life’s most challenging circumstances.

Music therapy

Having dedicated Music Therapists in our Hospice is a real treat – for patients, loved ones and our caregivers too. Often our Music Therapists will play live music on-request, taking patients on a walk down memory lane through their youth and life’s special events. On occasion, our Music Therapists have worked with patients to create recordings as legacy gifts for loved ones.

I am so proud to be part of a team that provides this level of comfort and holistic care for patients and their families.
