Did you know that one in five Australians are affected by mental illness? Senior Occupational Therapist Carissa explains how you can look after your mental health and wellbeing.

It’s important that we all take the time to look after our mental health and wellbeing on a daily basis.

There are many simple ways that that you can do this, whilst keeping in mind that what works for one person may not work for another.

Here are some examples of what you can do:

  • Disconnect from technology habits and reconnect with people
  • Live mindfully in the present
  • Stay physically active
  • Have an early night
  • Keep learning
  • Get to know your neighbours
  • Eat well
  • Spend time outdoors
  • Be kind, it boosts your happiness
  • Seek help and talk to others

 Activities for mental health patients

Our multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals deliver a range of programs and therapies to encourage wellness and independence amongst patients.

They have also introduced a variety of activities to equip patients with the skills and resources they need to live a full and healthy life.

These activities include hydrotherapy, music therapy, dance therapy, walking groups, African drumming and mindfulness relaxation.

As part of Mental Health Week, a range of activities were held at the hospital recently, including a special morning tea, tote making and flower arranging classes.

Such activities helps give a sense of participation and community amongst patients and caregivers.

If you or anyone you know needs support with their mental health, please speak to your general practitioner or contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit lifeline.org.au.
