While the holidays can be filled with fun and frivolity, for those experiencing distress, isolation or mental health issues they can sometimes be fraught and lonely.

Midland Head to Health adult mental health centre is open from 10am to 8pm every of the year, including all public holidays and weekends, for people experiencing mild to moderate mental health and emotional issues.

Located at 23 Old Great Northern Hwy, it supports people in Perth’s north and east, including Swan, Kalamunda and Mundaring. Services are provided at no cost.

“This time leading up to and throughout Christmas and New Year can sometimes be really stressful for patients and lead to an increased number of presentations to after-hours GPs and EDs,” said Midland Head to Health Manager Ruth Lawrence.

“At the same time, many community mental health providers are closed or have reduced hours,” she said.

“We are happy to be here every single day throughout this time for people in Perth’s north and east with mild to moderate concerns, so they can get the free mental health and emotional support they need, when they need it.

Midland Head to Health opened in March and provides a new approach in the mental health system, removing some of the traditional barriers for people seeking support for mild to moderate mental health concerns by offering a free, community-based walk-in service available from 10am – 8pm every day of the year.

It is part of an Australian Government initiative, via the WA Primary Health Alliance – PHN Perth North, to trial a number of adult mental health centres nationally, to improve access to services for people in distress who may be too complex for existing primary care, but don’t meet the criteria for acute services.

The centre is designed as a friendly, welcoming environment with a range of mental health professionals on hand to provide advice and support, along with assessment and short- to-medium-term treatment if needed. No referral or appointment is needed, however referrals are welcome.
