St John of God Health Care celebrates NAIDOC Week

The theme for NAIDOC Week is Get up! Stand up! Show up!

We are encouraging caregivers and community members to learn more about the local First Nations culture, history and language by getting involved in NAIDOC Week activities planned by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Take a look at these local NAIDOC Week events for you and your family to take part in and enjoy.

As a large health care organisation that operates in and services a vast range of communities spanning across Whadjuk Country in Australia’s South West to Eora Country in the East and so many places in between, we are also encouraging our caregivers and our communities to share a photo of some of the amazing places near where you live or work on social media.

Tag your photo with the local Aboriginal name for that place and include any other details that you might know about the place, history or environment. If you aren’t sure of the correct place name, don’t worry there is a great website available to help

We can also announce that all disposable coffee cups used at our cafes during NAIDOC Week will feature art created by Aboriginal artist Keith Brown.

Keith was born in Guyra (New England Tablelands), NSW. His father is from the Ngarabal language group and mother from Biripai language group.

He became interested in Aboriginal art later in life, handcrafting boomerangs from elbows in mulga trees and decorated them with Aboriginal artwork. Recently Keith has created large-format artworks on canvas. His creations are inspired and influenced by the colours, contours and textures of the land in the north-west and western parts on NSW where he spent his youth.

So when you order a coffee at one of our cafes, take a moment to look at the cup itself before enjoying a sip.
