In 2019, the theme of our celebrations is Opening the door of Hospitality; enabling a sense of connectivity and homecoming to remind us of the importance of welcome and acceptance, something John was well known for as he strived to improve the life of the poor and care for the neediest people.

St John of God Health Care Group Chief Executive Officer Dr Shane Kelly said John’s legacy was reflected in the care our caregivers provide to our patients.

“The spirit of hospitality, of welcome and acceptance is evidenced every day in our hospitals and our Community Services as we welcome and care for people, whether that be at reception, admission, in our residences, on wards and in theatre as we live our Mission to offer hospitality, hope and healing,” he said.

"I am proud of the humanity and care we show to those who need it - our patients and clients and their families or loved ones.

"That spark of humanity that’s at the core of each of us makes John’s story continue to be relevant and inspire us 500 years later."

Each year, St John of God Health Care celebrates the Saint’s Feast Day, in recognition of St John of God’s mission to alleviate suffering and comforting the sick in Spain in the 1500s.
