Connection, variety and a love of babies

There was never any doubt for Felicity that midwifery was the career for her but over the years she has learnt that it offers so much more.

What led you to a career in midwifery?

When I went into nursing I always thought I’d like to be a midwife. When my sister had her first baby in 2000 I knew this was for me! I love babies!!!

What are the benefits of supporting new families for an extended period after birth?

I really enjoy the continuity of care and seeing women progress through their pregnancy and once they had their lovely baby.

What do you like most about working in your healthcare setting (hospital/on the road/office)?

For me I love the variety. I get to teach antenatal classes, take people on tours of our maternity facilities and answer any questions, then hopefully meet them again once they’ve had their baby and help them with breastfeeding.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about midwifery?

Maybe that midwives only work in labour wards. There are many roles for midwives that also include working in neonatal special care units, working antenatally, teaching antenatal classes or the midwives that provide essential postnatal and follow up care.

What is your most memorable moment in midwifery?

I love seeing families grow and enjoy connecting with people when they have their second or third babies.
