Jeremy is new to DAWN, but was already working for St John of God Health Care when he seized the opportunity to move over to the service.

“I’ve seen firsthand the impact drug and alcohol dependency can have on individuals and their families, and I feel passionate about supporting people in need.”

“I applied for the role at DAWN straight away as it was the perfect opportunity for me to utilise my skills and experience to help make a difference in this space.”

St John of God Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Network (DAWN) is a free and confidential service that empowers people living with alcohol or drug dependency on their withdrawal journey, to enjoy the life they want.

From setting goals to liaising with GPs to vital referrals to other services, DAWN’s team of clinical nurse specialists provide practical advice and specialist support for people who want to move on from alcohol and drug use, as well as their families or support networks.

They help them understand their triggers and manage the withdrawal process at home.

There is a broad range of experience within the DAWN team, including emergency and mental health nursing and frontline experience in the homelessness sector.

New caregiver Jo said she was interested in the opportunity to work at DAWN because of the home-based approach to client care.

“It can be difficult for individuals to navigate treatment options for addiction and being in a home environment can be really beneficial as barriers associated with a clinical setting aren’t present.

“I see it as a privilege to be welcomed into someone’s home during a very difficult time in their lives so it’s my goal to do what I can to make the process easier for them.

“It’s really important to meet people where they are, and I think DAWN is a great example of this.”

The DAWN team work remotely across Perth but attend weekly in-person meetings and regular lunches to build and maintain a positive working culture, which has provided a warm welcome for new caregiver Teresa.

“In the short time I’ve been with the service I’ve noticed the team’s commitment to supporting one another and striving to improve client outcomes.

“There’s a willingness to refer to other providers of other services, such as counselling, where it’s in the client’s interest, and the talent within the team is inspiring. I’m excited to develop my professional skills and provide quality care to our clients.”

Manager Catherine Bryant is delighted to have welcomed Teresa, Jeremy and Jo and says they are an excellent complement to the team.

“Teresa, Jeremy and Jo are all highly skilled clinical nurse specialists with a passion for supporting people affected by drug and alcohol dependency.

“It’s wonderful to have the team back at capacity after staffing shortages faced across the healthcare industry since the beginning of the pandemic.

“We are in an excellent position to provide quality care to those accessing our service and I’m proud to support a highly skilled team.”
