Going above and beyond to support our clients

Mina entered St John of God Social Outreach’s Casa Venegas program in September last year with hopes of restarting his life and reconnecting with his family after years of struggling with schizophrenia and substance abuse.

Mina, who is originally from Egypt, had studied information technology, but unfortunately could not pursue a career in IT in Australia due to language barriers.

After working with Mina on his individual care plan, Casa Venegas caregiver, Janice, was able to gain Mina’s trust which allowed him to open about how he was feeling and what his aspirations were for the future.

“Mina expressed that he enjoyed driving, but had lost his licence due to extensive debt with the NSW State Debt Recovery service,” Janice said.

Within a couple of days, Janice worked with Mina to apply for a Working Development Order (WDO) which links people to counselling services whereby each attendance equates to an accrued State Debt being reduced.

The WDO allowed Mina’s licence to be reinstated and he was also able to apply for an early superannuation release to purchase a new car.

“Casa Venegas welcomed me regardless of my past and my medical condition,”

“The staff at Casa Venegas respected me as a human being and encouraged me to become more independent,” Mina said.

“They helped me fit back into the community and advocated on my behalf with health care services including helping with booking appointments and other allied health services.”

He is now working as a factory hand in the construction industry and hopes to save enough money to go back to Egypt to visit family.

“Mina used to be scared of his future, but now, he has a sense of purpose and values his future,” Janice said.
