St John of God Midland Public Hospital has become the first hospital within St John of God Health Care to directly employ interns and the first non-tertiary hospital in WA to be appointed a Primary Employing Health Service.

St John of God Health Care Group CEO Dr Shane Kelly said the internship program has been designed to provide an outstanding teaching, training and experience for interns, who will also benefit from working at a number of our hospitals.

“Interns will have the added benefit of being part of a small cohort, further supporting individualised training, education and mentorship,” he said.

“Currently the program includes training at our Midland and Subiaco hospitals, and we plan to extend the program to our other WA-based hospitals, as part of our role in contributing to developing a highly skilled medical workforce into the future.

“Our organisation has a long history of providing training for young doctors through secondments in partnership with tertiary public hospitals, which has included resident medical officer and registrar positions at our various hospitals.”

All interns will experience core rotations in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine and General Medicine/Acute Aged Care. Their other rotation will be in Paediatrics, Intensive Care (ICU) or Neurology/Stroke.

In 2020 the ICU term will be undertaken at St John of God Subiaco Hospital and the rest undertaken at St John of God Midland Public Hospital.

St John of God Midland Public Hospital Chief Executive Officer Michael Hogan said four terms have been selected for the intern program to provide interns with a greater depth of experience and work life balance, including access to leave.

“Interns will learn from experienced consultants and have access to dedicated learning and research opportunities as well as flexible work arrangements,” he said.

On successful completion of the 12-month internship, interns will have direct and preferential access to 12-month RMO rotation streams within St John of God hospitals.

Program highlights include:

  • A fully accredited program that meets all Post Graduate Medical Council of Western Australia and Medical Board of Australia requirements.
  • Four terms to enhance learning and experience as well as maximising access to leave
  • Core terms in Medicine/Acute Aged Care, General Surgery and Emergency Medicine at St John of God Midland Public Hospital.
  • Non-core terms in Paediatrics or Stroke at St John of God Midland Public Hospital or ICU at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.
  • Dedicated formal and informal teaching by experienced consultants.
  • A welfare program, including mentorship, to help interns transition to working as a doctor.

An information evening about our St John of God Health Care’s intern program is being held at St John of God Subiaco Hospital on Wednesday 8 May at 5.30pm.
