David has schizophrenia and prior to joining the Casa Venegas Program, the 50-year-old was battling with poly-substance abuse and struggled with everyday living skills.

“I feel pretty good and really excited about having my own home, and I am in a much better place than I was many years ago,” David said.

During his time at Casa Venegas, David has learned essential life skills such as cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene which is helping him to live independently within the community.

“I like to go for walks and meet other people and talk to my neighbours,” David said.

“Having my own place makes me feel distinguished and happy.”

About Casa Venegas

Casa Venegas run by St John of God Health Care exists to break the cycle of homelessness, isolation and other barriers by providing medium term accommodation to people with mental health issues in western and inner Sydney.

People with mental health issues are one of the most disadvantaged groups in society and make up a big part of our homeless population.

Our service helps people with mental health issues who are at risk of homelessness to increase community connection through a recovery based framework.
