Select artworks will line the walls of our Murdoch, Subiaco, Mt Lawley and Midland hospitals to showcase the works of the best established and new portraiture artists in WA and Australia.

SJGHC is a major sponsor of the prize, which attracts up to 500 artists each year, as a part of our commitment to promoting the benefits arts brings to health and wellbeing.

SJGHC Chief Executive Officer Dr Michael Stanford said research has shown that arts participation, expression and enjoyment can help to improve a person’s overall wellbeing.

“We have a very strong belief in the healing power of the arts in many aspects of people’s lives and it plays a key role in our Mission to heal,” he said.

“Adding arts in our hospitals has been shown to provide improved health outcomes for our patients, visitors and caregivers.”

Dr Stanford said showing the Black Swan Portraiture Prize artworks at our hospitals also provided another opportunity to celebrate the wealth of local artistic talent.

“We design our facilities as welcoming and healing environments which have space for the arts for our patients, visitors and caregivers to enjoy,” he said.

“The Black Swan Portraiture Prize is the third richest arts prize in Australia, which means the calibre of the works submitted is always very high and we look forward to inviting the local community into our hospitals to see a selection of pieces.”

  • Selected artworks will tour our Perth hospitals until 14 January 2018.
