Dr Harvey is a general surgeon with advanced training in colorectal surgery.
After completing his fellowship in general surgery, Dr Harvey obtained membership of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) by completing the CSSANZ advanced training program in colorectal surgery. Dr Harvey is passionate about providing quality care to regional Western Australia. He is the only member of the CSSANZ living and working in the South West.
After completing medical school at The University of Western Australia, Dr Harvey gained experience in diverse specialties including obstetrics, intensive care, and tropical medicine before training in general surgery at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne.
Upon earning his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) as a general surgeon, Dr Harvey was selected for the renowned post-fellowship program offered by the CSSANZ. This program entailed intensive clinical training in high volume colorectal units in Auckland City Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital, complemented by a rigorous academic program.
Dr Harvey is now fulfilling his passion by practicing in a regional area, where he not only provides a colorectal service, but also a comprehensive range of general surgery services. In addition to the full spectrum of benign and malignant colorectal conditions, he also treats common general surgical problems such as gall bladder disease, hernias, and minor skin lumps and bumps.
Dr Harvey is also an accredited endoscopist for colonoscopy and endoscopy by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA), a member of the International Continence Society (ICS), and General Surgeons Australia (GSA).
Areas of expertise include:
- Colonoscopy
- Colorectal cancer
- Pelvic floor surgery, including rectal prolapse
- Sacral neuromodulation
- Benign colorectal disease, including diverticular disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis
- Proctology, including haemorrhoids, anal fissure and fistula
- Intestinal failure (IF)
Dr Harvey holds a Master of Surgery (Surgical Outcomes) at the University of Sydney and authored a dissertation on improving methods to measure the quality of surgical care. He has published on pelvic floor diagnostics in Colorectal Disease, and presented his research at the scientific meeting of the International Continence Society. He has also published on service delivery of colorectal procedures in regional areas in the ANZ Journal of Surgery. Currently, Dr Harvey is working on a project aimed at improving the monitoring of patient-reported quality of life outcomes after J-pouch surgery for ulcerative colitis.
In addition, Dr Harvey places a strong emphasis on surgical training and education. He is an instructor for the Training in Professional Skill (TIPS) course, run by RACS. This course equips surgical registrars with essential communication and professional skills to promote a culture of patient safety. Dr Harvey also serves as an examiner for RACS clinical examinations of surgical registrars.
While colorectal surgery remains his primary focus, Dr Harvey’s academic interests are broad. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and post-graduate qualifications in European languages and tropical medicine. Dr Harvey is also an advocate for the well-being of surgeons, recognising its direct impact on patients. He was invited to speak at the Surgeon’s Wellbeing Summit held by General Surgeons Australia. He also enjoys working in Aboriginal health and regularly travels to Alice Springs, offering support in emergency surgical care and colorectal surgery. He enjoys the active lifestyle the South West region offers, enjoying the outdoors with his partner (a general practitioner), the kids and a kelpie.
