Dr Joseph Figueiredo was brought up in Perth, and graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1989.  He did his residency at Royal Perth Hospital, as it was a great generalist hospital which served me well in my future medical career.   

Gaining anaesthetic experience in Hastings in  England in the mid 90’s, Dr Figueiredo decided to return to Western Australia and work in the country.   

Rural medicine always seemed so interesting, so he decided on Geraldton, which he thinks is Utopia on Earth, with great and supportive colleagues, interesting and appreciative patients.   Geraldton is so convenient, very little traffic, so much to do without the big city hassles, with access to the great outdoors and the beach on your doorstep.   

Dr Figueiredo is a partner of Panaceum, one of the largest general practices in WA. With my two other partners we built it because we wanted the Geraldton community to have access to high quality care, and to keep future generations of doctors coming to Geraldton.   

His main medical interests are anaesthetics, obstetrics and the totality of general practice and he loves the variety of medical work available in Geraldton and that feeling of being a family doctor, and looking after the same patient for 20 years. 

Delivering babies, looking after that baby’s parents and grandparents and great grandparents, that is something rural docs are blessed with.Dr Figueiredo's wife has strong ties to St John of God, and both children were born and raised in Geraldton.   

In his spare time, he loves pottering in  his garden, cycling rather slowly, watching Test matches at the WACA and watching the Eagles.
