St John of God Foundation Jake fundraiserOn 15 September 2017, 11-year old local Bunbury boy, Jake Townsend-Hyde shaved his hair to raise funds for cancer, in support of Mrs Sue Devereaux.

Mrs Devereaux was Jake’s year one teacher at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School and had raised funds for cancer in 2012 by shaving her head.

Five years later, Mrs Devereaux was diagnosed with cancer herself – after hearing this news, Jake made the brave decision to shave off his long locks in support of her.

“I love Mrs D and I wanted to do something to say thank you to her,” Jake said.

Jake’s campaign raised $2,500 towards the South West Cancer Centre at St John of God Bunbury Hospital, including the purchase of a coffee machine to support patients during their treatment.

Jake’s mum, Mrs Karina Hyde said she was proud of her son.

"Jake is a very thoughtful and amazing boy, we are so very proud of him," she said.

The coffee machine is available for use by patients and their families, making their time during treatment more comfortable.

Thanks to Jake’s bravery, St John of God Foundation, which raises money to support the communities served by St John of God Health Care, the hospital is able to continue providing the best care to patients and their families.
