The benefits of using arts to enhance the wellbeing of patients at St John of God Warrnambool Hospital was recently highlighted through a program offered in partnership with Musica Viva Australia.

On 12 September, rock and bluegrass band Zeeko brought its catchy vibe to the Warrnambool region thanks to the generous support of St John of God Health Care, a leading not-for-profit health care provider.

The tour for Musica Viva In Schools reached over 450 students from Emmanuel College, Merrivale Primary School and St Patrick’s Primary School in Koroit.

St John of God Warrnambool Hospital Director of Mission Jenny Conrick said St John of God Health Care's arts and health philosophy is to create welcoming, healing and stimulating environments to actively engage patients.

“In conjunction with Musica Viva, the hospital ran a 12-week Music Group Project in October designed to improve participant wellbeing, aid recovery and create a positive environment," she said.

"Activities included singing, playing music instruments and song writing. The effectiveness and impact of the project will be evaluated by a Research Fellow from the University of Western Australia.”

Thanks to St John of God Health Care, several Warrnambool students will also have the opportunity to attend a performance from Musica Viva’s International Concert Series at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

For Colette Vella, Director of Business Development, Education at Musica Viva, their enthusiasm is a source of inspiration and joy.

“It is a powerful and moving experience to witness the impact a live performance can have on a young mind. Without the support of St John of God Health Care, we could not bring music into the lives of so many children across Australia," Colette said.

St John of God Foundation, which raises money to support and give back to the communities we serve, hopes to continue St John of God Health Care's support for arts to aid better patient outcomes.
