Great South West Bed Race
24 Oct 2016
The event raised over $30,000 towards the St John of God Foundation's South West Coronary and Cancer Service Campaign.
The funds will be used to purchase a device that cools the scalp; a proven approach to reduce chemotherapy induced hair loss.
The innovative machine works by lowering the temperature of the scalp, which reduces blood flow and cellular metabolism rate. As a result, hair cells are not fully exposed to treatment and therefore are able to survive.
Mr Mark Grime, St John of God Bunbury Hospital CEO said, “for some people, keeping their hair during their chemotherapy treatment is very important, as a change in appearance can be a visual reminder of the disease and treatment.”
“Regional patients will now have access to scalp cooling technology in the South West similar to patients living in Perth. Thanks to the generosity and support of our community, South West patients are receiving care closer to home,” Mr Grime said.
The Great South West Bed Race will be back on Saturday, 7 April 2018.
