New St John of God Hospital to open in Berwick this year

In 2017 the state of the art seven-storey $120 million St John of God Berwick Hospital will be opening its doors.

We are committed to making sure our health services support the growing communities we serve, with the $120 million new hospital build nearing completion on the Kangan Drive site in Berwick.

The new hospital is being delivered in partnership with Generation Healthcare REIT (GHC) and will be solely operated by St John of God Health Care. It will provide:

190 new beds
six operating theatres, a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory
two endoscopy theatres
six birthing suites.

The hospital will also provide the first Intensive Care Unit for the region, along with a range of cardiac services and a dedicated cardiac unit. In addition to the new hospital build, we opened a $20.4 million specialist centre, which includes a day oncology clinic in February 2015.

Future planning will see this expanded to 316 beds and 12 operating theatres, while the Gibb Street site will be redeveloped to provide new services including rehabilitation, with a dedicated outpatient rehabilitation centre.

What this means for the local workforce

The new hospital building program will significantly benefit the local communities of Casey and Cardinia. We currently employ more than 400 caregiver staff, and the new hospital is anticipated to create another 200 jobs.

This is also good news for our medical professionals, with an additional 100 medical and surgical professionals expected to administer the new and expanded services – up from the 500 visiting doctors we currently have working with us.
