Meet Lee, one of our passionate Assistants in Nursing (AIN) in our Restorative Unit.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Lee spent most of his working life as a truck driver, transporting MRI machines all over Europe.

In 2008, Lee moved to Australia to spend time with his wife’s family who had relocated years earlier.

During this time, he continued driving trucks and road trains up north and over east, and loved it.

However, two years ago he decided it was time to spend more time home and less time on the road. Knowing retirement wouldn’t suit him, his wife encouraged him to get a qualification.

So at 64 years of age, Lee completed his first qualification – a Cert II in Health Support Services and continued on to complete the Assistant in Nursing Course at Mt Lawley TAFE.

While studying, Lee’s placement was at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital.

“I loved it here,” he said.

“The caregivers were fantastic and incredibly supportive, everyone wanted to help.”

“On my last day, I spoke to the Nurse Manager and asked what I needed to do to get a job here,” he said.

Eight months ago, Lee started as a permanent AIN at our hospital. When asked what he loves most about his job he says it’s the thought of helping people and creating a positive experience for healing.

“I have a lot of experiences and can talk to anyone about anything,” he said.

Reflecting on the process, Lee said he’s learned a lot about himself.

“You’re never too old to learn.”
