Rod started as a laundry assistant on 21 December 2001, when the hospital was still named Mercy Hospital, and since this time has become a staple in the hospital community.

“My duties included loading the washing machines and emptying and delivering the laundry to the wards, said Rod.

“One of my highlights was working with Jeremy Hamilton for 15 years. Jeremy had a disability and I found that I could communicate and understand Jeremy better than others so after the laundry closed in 2009, I was appointed Jeremy’s work carer for many years afterwards.”

Functions Coordinator Rosemary Joyce worked with Rod for his entire 20 years at the hospital and said it won’t be the same without him.

“Rod has always been the same, he is reliable, even natured and always willing to go the extra mile. He doesn’t miss a beat, there are no mistakes with Rod, said Rosemary.

“His role takes him across all the different areas of the hospital so he is well known and loved by all our caregivers and tenants.

“Rod was part of a great team in the laundry but he adjusted really well to trying something new when he was offered a different position after it closed.

“Will miss you Rod and thank you for your 20 years of service to our hospital.”

At 73 years of age, Rod will be kept busy in his retirement doing lots of work around the house and hopes to continue travelling with his wife Rina.
