It’s been a great start to our hospital redevelopment, with more to come in 2023.

The project began in early July, with local Ballarat builder H.Troon, teaming up with BESIX Watpac to build the $80 million St John of God Ballarat Hospital redevelopment.

The project will include:

  • A new medical services building
  • A new 10 bed ICU/CCU
  • A new Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)
  • 4 new operating theatres
  • Expanded Recovery Room
  • Upgraded catheterization laboratory (Hybrid Cath Lab)
  • A new 30-bed in-patient ward

2022 in review

Since July, the project has been progressing as scheduled, despite the increased rainfall Ballarat saw throughout winter and spring.

The new Pathology space was completed, with Australian Clinical Labs (ACL) moving from their old space into this new location in early September. Once completed, the works for the new Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) could begin.

We also saw a lot of works being completed in preparation for the new Medical Services Building. We reached a major milestone in December with the foundation being laid, and concrete pylons being positioned.

2023  - What’s ahead?

2023 will be an exciting year with some major building works due to be completed.
The first half of the year will see the new CSSD being completed, and new theatre staff rooms and change rooms.

The second half of 2023 will have a major milestone with the new structure for the Medical Services Building being completed.

The new facade will also be completed in Q3 this year.

Director of Redevelopment, Emma Challands, is excited for what 2023 holds.

“I’ve been involved in many projects over my career, and it’s still astounding how quickly a new hospital wing can be built.”

The redevelopment remains on track to be completed in Q2 2024.
