Curtin University medical students begin placements

St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals CEO Michael Hogan said the hospital delighted to be providing high quality clinical experience to medical students as part of its focus on supporting the next generation of doctors.

“We are providing 18 student placements in 2020 and this number is expected to expand over the next few years,” he said.

Based in a new, custom-built facility near the hospital in the old Midland Railway Workshops, the Curtin Midland Campus provides a base for Curtin Medical School students in their fourth and fifth year of study, as well as students studying other Curtin University health science disciplines.

Curtin Medical School Acting Dean Professor Sally Sandover said many of the St John of God Health Care staff had taught the students on campus over the first three years of their course.

“Learning in the clinical setting is an exciting progression for the students and a wonderful opportunity to learn from dedicated staff,” Professor Sandover said.

Mr Hogan said it is hoped that once the medical students complete their studies, many of them will return to continue their career at the hospital.

The hospital provides a number of learning opportunities for students and junior doctors.

Last financial year clinical placements were undertaken by 292 medical students, 117 nursing students, 10 paramedicine students, two anaesthetic technicians and 132 allied health students.

In addition training was undertaken by 46 resident medical officers, 62 registrars and 34 graduate nurses at the hospital.
