St John of God Midland Public Hospital CEO Michael Hogan said the agreement is of significance for the emerging Midland learning and health precinct, which is expected to enhance health services for the local community.

“As part of the agreement, the hospital will begin receiving medical students from Curtin University from 2019,” he said.

Based near the hospital in the old Midland Railway Workshops, the Curtin University Midland Campus recently commenced construction.

The Midland Campus is expected to provide a number of medical, nursing, allied health and business courses.

Mr Hogan said when the new campus is opened in 2020, St John of God Midland Public Hospital will initially provide 60 student placements.

“Student placement numbers are expected to increase over the years.

“The hospital’s commitment to assisting the next generation of doctors extends well beyond medical student placements.

“It is hoped that once these students complete their studies, many of them will return as junior doctors to the hospital for further training.

“It is also hoped that some will establish practices in the area when they fully qualify.”
