Quality, safety and care

St John of God Health Care strives to provide our patients with safe, effective and high quality care.

Our caregivers are highly skilled and trained, and are committed to ongoing professional development. We consistently review our processes to ensure our patients have the best possible experience while staying at our hospitals.

We're partners in your care

We strive to give you the information you need when making important decisions about your health care.

St John of God Health Care hospitals regularly monitor and publicly report on performance against a range of quality and safety measures, including:

  • infection prevention control
  • medication management
  • patient falls prevention
  • patient feedback
  • pressure injury prevention.

Accreditation

In Australia, all public and private hospitals are assessed against the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS).

The standards set out the level of care you should expect when staying in any hospital. They are designed to keep patients safe and improve the quality of health care.

All of our hospitals undergo regular accreditation assessments. You can view the assessment and rating of any St John of God Health Care hospital by searching on the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) website.

Infection prevention control

St John of God Health Care has a rigorous infection control program which works to detect and prevent patient infections in our hospitals.

Our hospitals regularly report on performance against national benchmarks set by the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC). Each hospital publishes data on hand hygiene compliance and hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus blood stream infections (SABSIs).

Medication management

The safe management of medications is an important part of our patient care. St John of God Health Care works with patients so they understand and are actively involved in the management of their medications. We also use a range of safety strategies to reduce the risk of medication errors.

Patient falls prevention

St John of God Health Care uses a range of strategies to reduce and prevent patient falls in our hospitals. Our caregivers regularly monitor at-risk patients, create fall prevention plans and encourage patients to ask for help when moving around.

Our hospitals regularly publish patient falls data against national benchmarks set by the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC).

Pressure injury prevention

Pressure injuries (also known as 'bed sores') result from prolonged pressure to an area of skin and can develop while staying in hospital. They can range from reddened skin to large open wounds and are often painful, take a long time to heal, and slow down a patient's recovery.

St John of God Health Care uses a range of preventative methods to reduce pressure injuries. Our hospitals regularly publish pressure injuries data against national benchmarks set by the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC).

Feedback and consumer engagement

Patient feedback and satisfaction is regularly monitored by our hospital sites, health services and caregivers.

We use measures developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) and the Australian Mental Health Outcomes and Classification Network (AMHOCN) to record patient feedback.

St John of God Health Care uses patient feedback to improve personalised care across our patients hospital stay.
