RSV is a serious and common virus affecting the airways and lungs of newborns similar to the flu virus or the common cold.

It is the leading cause of infant hospitalisation in Australia with an estimated 1200 infants hospitalised each year in WA.

Parents who have their babies at a St John God Health Care hospital in Western Australia – at Midland, Murdoch, Subiaco, Bunbury and Geraldton - from 1 May -30 September 2024, will be eligible for their children to receive the Nirsevimab vaccine.

Babies born outside of these dates can receive the vaccine from their General Practitioner/ Child Health Clinic.

The vaccine will be administered as a one off dose following consent from parent/s

Parents can also chose to immunise their baby after being discharged through a General Practitioner or child clinic.

The vaccine is not mandatory however the WA Department of Health recommends protecting infant’s baby from this serious but preventable disease through immunisation.
