Mindfulness

Mindfulness relates to your ability to be aware of what is going on both inside and around you. We work closely with you to improve your mindfulness as a part of your mental health recovery.

Many of us feel that we sometimes miss out on parts of our lives, and we are often not present in what we are doing.

Mindfulness can be considered a state of consciousness by paying attention to our present experience in an open-minded and accepting manner.

What would I be doing if I were mindful?

  • Observe and notice what is happening in and around you in the here and now
  • Describing whatever I find in the present – just the facts
  • Not pass judgement.

Benefits of mindfulness

Benefits of mindfulness may include:

  • better concentration
  • reduced anxiety and depression
  • increased self-control and willpower
  • a greater empathy and compassion
  • reduced pain sensitivity.

These benefits depend on your particular circumstances and require you to fully participate in necessary care and management. You should consult a specialist in this area before deciding whether treatment is suitable for you.

Self-compassion

A component of self-compassion has recently been included in this program. Self-compassion can help us heal our wounds with love and kindness through three components:

  • loving kindness – being warm and understanding toward ourselves
  • common humanity – recognising that suffering and personal inadequacy is part of the human experience
  • mindfulness – being aware that we are unkind to ourselves.
