Angela, who has worked at the hospital for 13 years, said being able to work autonomously within the midwife scope of practice and to the full capacity of that, is incredibly rewarding.

“There are lots of unexpected events that might happen that we are able to respond to,” she said.

“If we are working on the ward, then we are also back up for the delivery suite so if there are women giving birth on the shift you are working you will then also be able to enter delivery suit to assist with the birth of babies.

“We also attend c-sections elective or emergency as a part of our daily tasks when we are working on the ward.

“We also get to work in the special care nursery and assist the nurses who are working in there as well.

“We really get lots of varied experienced throughout our shift and every day.”

Angela said beyond the clinical work and variety on offer, the supportive and close-knit environment within the hospital and the community was appealing.

“We have a positive outlook of caring for women and their babies and families within our maternity ward,” she said.

“It’s a really tight-knit community in Hawkesbury.

“I really enjoy being a part of the community feel and we certainly still have that country feel about our hospital where we look after women time and again and that is a special part about working at Hawkesbury District Health Service.

“I often see the women that I cared for in the community and have been able to see their babies grow up in the community.

“I am also a mum with small children myself and some of the children, who I was there for at their births, are now going to school with my children. I get to watch them grow up and have beautiful conversations with their parents about their births and their time in the hospital.”
