Eating disorders

Eating disorders can take many different forms and interfere with your day-to-day life. We offer treatment programs that may help your physical symptoms through education, support and compassionate health care planning.

Your mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing is our priority. Our dedicated health care team works closely with you to plan for your recovery.

What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders can include regular under-eating, over-eating, or purging which can significantly affect your health and wellbeing.

We offer a multidisciplinary approach to eating disorder treatment which helps you overcome physical, mental or emotional barriers to promote recovery. We treat all types of eating disorders including:

  • anorexia nervosa
  • bulimia nervosa
  • binge eating disorder
  • other eating disorders – such as atypical anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, purging disorder and night eating syndrome.

Our eating disorders program

We offer a holistic approach to treatment by supporting your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

We focus on providing person-centred care and work with you to develop an individualised care plan to meet your specific needs.

Your treatment program may include:

  • acute care – treatment for physical complications that can result from an eating disorder
  • therapy – psychotherapy and counselling to help you identify the factors that may contribute to the onset of an eating disorder and can equip you with positive life skills and strategies to manage the disorder
  • nutrition support – guidance on healthy eating and help developing meal plans to work towards establishing a well-balanced diet
  • medication – may be used to target underlying mood disorders such as depression or anxiety, or to stabilise weight recovery. It is recognised the effectiveness of medication increases when combined with other forms of therapy such as counselling.

We provide programs in a safe, relaxed and welcoming environment, and work as a team of psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and allied health professionals.

You may participate in group sessions with other patients, and individual sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist. You may access our eating disorder programs and receive treatment in an outpatient centre, or as an inpatient while admitted to hospital.

Our inpatient program can help you with acute symptoms of your condition while our outpatient program focuses on recovery and relapse prevention.

Your general practitioner or psychiatrist will refer you to the program that best suits your needs.

Benefits of treatment for eating disorders

  • A better understanding of the factors and emotional triggers that shape eating disorders.
  • Developing skills to challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours.
  • Helping you to establish healthy eating routines.
  • Looking at other coexisting mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

These benefits depend on your particular circumstances and require your full participation. You should consult a specialist in this area before deciding whether treatment is suitable for you.
