Volunteer caregivers get gardening

Volunteer caregivers at St John of God Murdoch Hospital have helped bring a smile to the faces of our patients and caregivers through their efforts in the gardens.

Volunteer Manager Helen Jackson said a couple of our volunteer caregivers joined her to help makeover a few gardens on the grounds, including those near the ponds and rotunda.

“An effort to reinvigorate the gardens was sparked by the 25th anniversary of volunteering here at the Hospital, so the gardens surrounding the statue looked spiffy ahead of the ceremony,” she said.

“Volunteer caregivers have generously given their time with all cuttings donated or cultivated by them to use in the multiple gardens or donated by the City of Melville.”

“Occasionally we will have blitz days where we gather and work together. It’s rewarding because gardening is something that really brings people together, visitors and patients connect with gardens and bring their stories, not to mention the stunning outcome.

Volunteer caregiver Suzanne Cooper said she enjoyed chatting to visitors while working in the gardens, particularly the native garden outside MURTEC.

“People come passed and often stop to admire the gardens or ask questions,” she said.
