If you or a loved one is unlucky enough to be bitten by a snake, follow our basic first aid to minimise the spread of venom:
- remain calm and as still as possible
- call 000 for ambulance
- firm pressure bandage over bite site and entire length of limb, without cutting blood flow.
- splint the limb if you're able to.
- do not wash, cut or suck the bite.
Snake identification can be very unreliable and should not be depended on for treatment.
Never try to catch, kill or trap a snake, instead ensure the snake has an exit path away from you or your home.
The Emergency Department at St John of God Murdoch is equipped with anti-venom and available 24/7 should you need us. Please advise your ambulance driver you have private health insurance.
