St John of God Murdoch Hospital Exercise in cancer care

15 January 2019

A supported exercise program is now available to patients having treatment at the St John of God Murdoch Hospital Cancer Centre, in collaboration with experienced Accredited Exercise Physiologists at Murdoch University.

The aim of the program is to improve your exercise knowledge, skills and confidence, and to self-manage your exercise program for the long term. The exercise program prescribed for you will be based on your exercise capacity and goals.

You are eligible to participate if you are a current or past patient of our Cancer Centre, and your Oncologist has agreed that you can participate.

Initial consultation

To participate, you will need to complete an initial consultation to assess your current and previous medical, health and exercise status, and identify your goals for the exercise program.

A subsequent consultation is required to review exercise technique and adjust your program.

Exercise program

Option 1 - clinic based at Murdoch University

If deemed appropriate you can complete your personalised exercise program under the supervision of an Accredited Exercise Physiologist at Murdoch University.

Open class sessions are available Tuesday and Thursday from 7.00am to 12.00pm and 3.00pm to 6.00pm. You may attend the clinic at any time during these sessions.

Option 2 - home-based support

A software program called Physitrack is used for home-based exercise programs and on-going maintenance.

This program is a free application that you can download to your smart phone or device. Your personalised program, including videos and descriptions of each exercise are accessible to you at the touch of a button.

This program also allows you to track your progress and communicate directly with the Exercise Physiologist.
