Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Bruce Thyer retires
St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital has farewelled retiring Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Bruce Thyer.
Well-known to WA families from Mt Lawley, Perth Hills and the Wheatbelt, Dr Thyer started working at St John of God Mt Lawley hospital in 1989 and has delivered countless babies throughout his career.
Thyer Women’s Health, located in heritage listed Killowen House, will live on with son Dr Matthew Thyer now taking the reins of the popular practice.
“The highlight of my career is being able to work with my son over the past four years, share my knowledge and experience and now hand the practice over to him”, Dr Bruce Thyer said.
“Being based in one location for a large part of my career has meant that I have delivered entire families and sometimes two generations of babies.
“I remember delivering one lady in 1972 as a Medical Student and then many years later, her five children, however I think the record is seven babies for one family.
“I want to thank all my colleagues at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital for their friendship and support, it is because of you that I can retire with so many good memories.”
St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital Acting Chief Executive Officer, Vanessa Unwin said that it was reassuring for local families to know that Dr Matthew Thyer would continue the family tradition at the Mount Lawley based hospital.
“As a leading maternity hospital we are delighted Dr Matthew Thyer will continue the family practice and we will continue to support him in this journey," she said.
“It makes it easier for our women and families who have built trust and a connection with Dr Bruce Thyer throughout their pregnancies to know that Dr Matthew Thyer will be there for them for their subsequent pregnancies.
“We congratulate Dr Bruce Thyer on a wonderful fulfilling career and wish him all the best for a relaxing and well earnt retirement.”
A true professional, on his last day at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital, Dr Thyer delivered twin babies. He is looking forward to enjoying a quieter life on his property in York.
St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital has been delivering babies since 1937 at the riverside site location in the suburb of Mount Lawley.
