These sobering facts are behind National Stroke Week, which runs from Monday 4 September to Sunday 10 September.

The aim of National Stroke Week is to make sure every Australian household has someone who knows the signs of stroke and to call 000.

A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted and can be caused by genetic and lifestyle factors.

Time is of the essence if you suspect someone is having a stroke and there are some simple signs to recognise stroke:

Face – check their face, has their mouth drooped?

Arms – can they lift both arms?

Speech – is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?

Time – is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 straight away.

There are some great resources on the National Stroke Week website if you would like to learn more about stroke and what can be done to decrease risk. Visit strokefoundation.org.au
