Joy walks the talk to combat inequality in our community

Walking 100 kilometres in the name of charity is one of the ways Joy Anderson and her fellow nursing team show their dedication to helping those who are disadvantaged or living in poverty – central to the theme of this year’s International Nurses Day on Friday 12 May.

Joy, who has been part of our Endoscopy team for four years, and nursing since she was 17, says her work and interest in volunteering and taking part in charity events are part of her larger interest in taking care of patients and people.

“Obviously, I very much enjoy walking,” says Joy.

“I joined together with some of my nurse colleagues to complete the 100 kilometre walk, two years in a row.  The walk took us from Darlington, through Midvale, John Forrest National Park, Chidlow and finished in Kalamunda.

“The quickest time we achieved was 23 hours, and it was a great feeling knowing we were taking part in this charity work, which mirrors this year’s theme of sustainable development goals through trying to combat poverty and inequality.

“Being part of a nursing team who takes the time to participate in events like these is great.

“The teamwork is one of the things I enjoy most about my job.  I learn so much from my colleagues every day, and that keeps it interesting.

“We have people in our team from all different backgrounds, which makes it feel like a never-ending opportunity to learn.”

Anna Beazley, Nurse Unit Manager of the Endoscopy Unit, says Joy is a very accomplished member of the team who does lots for the community in her spare time.

“Joy’s compassion reaches everyone she works with.  She often organises baby showers or invites single mums over for dinner or lunch so their children can play at her ‘rural retreat’, which is her home,” says Anna.

“She epitomises what we celebrate each year on International Nurses Day.”

Our interview with Joy is part of a series of profiles on our nurses, to celebrate International Nurses Day on Friday 12 May.
