Baby boom for St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital family7 April 2017

It comes as no surprise that the family is known throughout our maternity unit – with all nine of their babies born at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital.

Even better, Ngaire, Troy and her sister were born at our hospital, as were her sisters 11 children – bringing the number to 23 babies in two families being born here.

“When Gertrude was born, it was something of a reunion for my sister as well, as she caught up with some of the midwives that have helped her give birth to her 11 babies.

“We had a bit of a giggle, as one of my friends also had her eight babies here, so it was a bit of a crowd,” she said.

When asked what advice Ngaire would give pregnant mums, she admitted that with each birth, she treated it as her first.

“People would assume that I know all there is to know about pregnancy and birth because of my experience, however each time, I find myself seeking information about what I can expect to refresh my memory.

“I ask for advice from friends and family, and from my mum who was a midwife.

“I’ve realised the benefits of allied health professionals as well. My sister is a physiotherapist, and she taught me lots about breathing, which really helped my experience with Gertrude.

“Also attend antenatal classes if you can, they give you a good opportunity to ask questions and find out what is offered.

“This is also true when I have given birth.  Each time, I tell the midwife that I need help to be talked through it and supported, as if it is my first time.”

We chatted about her birth experiences and whether any in particular stood out.

“I have been very lucky to have healthy pregnancies, however my first birth was difficult and long,” says Ngaire.

“I was exhausted but was lucky enough to have a fantastic midwife who stood beside me and supported me, encouraging me to keep going.  She gave me the confidence to know that I could do this and bring my baby into the world myself.

“Looking back, this made me realise that being well informed and prepared is really important, as is having a good birth team around you who will support you in your decisions.

“I would also say, though, be ready to let things go if it is necessary and do what is best for you and your baby.”

Ngaire’s obstetrician for seven of her nine babies was Dr Ian Churchward.
