Mr Gounder said the information session is being held to assist those wanting to find out more about the steps involved with bariatric surgery and the recovery process.

“Unfortunately, there are many people who find it a struggle to adequately manage their weight loss, which can lead to a range of health issues,” he said.

“I take great care to ensure patients receive the best type of surgical treatment for their struggle with obesity and tailor treatment to a patient’s individual needs.

“Bariatric surgery can have an almost immediate and sustainable effect on relieving a patient’s suffering as well as prevent a host of medical illness.”

Weight loss surgery can be helpful for people with a body mass index above 35 or above 30 for people with Type 2 Diabetes.

With more than 18 years’ of surgical experience Dr Gounder performs a variety of weight loss procedures including gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch operations and revisional surgery.

Dr Gounder said over the past five years, gastric surgeons have moved away from gastric bands to more robust operations, such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery.

“Unfortunately, easy access of fast food, heavily processed meats, unlimited soft drinks and genetics combined with our contemporary sedentary lifestyle is leading to significantly high incidents of people being overweight and obese in the community,” he said.

“Our information session will include an overview on weight loss surgery as well as advice from our dietitians and a patient who has previously undertaken gastric surgery, to help people considering undertaking potentially life changing bariatric surgery.”
