Mental health in young people - the stats
In Australia, it has been shown that one in seven young Australians experience a mental health condition.
About one in 35 young Australians aged four to 17 experience a depressive disorder.
One in 14 young Australians (6.9 per cent) aged four to 17 experienced an anxiety disorder in 2015. This is equivalent to approximately 278,000 young people.
The number of deaths by suicide in young Australians is the highest it has been in 10 years.
Suicide is the biggest killer of young Australians and accounts for the deaths of more young people than car accidents.
How can young people get help?
The good news is that help is available to young people who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing.
At St John of God Burwood Hospital, we run an anxiety management program to assist young people navigate challenges in their lives which cause emotional distress and unwanted behaviors such as anger, social isolation and even self-harm.
The good news is that there are plenty of things young people can do for themselves.
These tips sound simple but they are important, whatever your age:

- get enough sleep
- exercise regularly.
