St John of God Burwood Hospital’s Mother and Baby Unit has increased its capacity by 50 per cent – from eight to 12 beds. The welcoming, purpose-built facility admits mums and their babies in home-like accommodation incorporating an open living environment that includes a kitchen and lounge.
Women are more likely to be affected by anxiety and depression during pregnancy and after childbirth than at any other time in their lives and postnatal depression affects at least one in seven new mothers. The Mother and Baby Unit, located in Sydney’s Inner West, is the only facility in NSW providing specialist live-in care.
Numerous therapeutic models help the recovery of mothers with a perinatal mental health disorder or illness, based on a strong philosophy of helping mothers and infants develop a secure attachment.
Intervention during this critical period has been proven to improve the health of mothers and their ability to nurture their child. Specialist care at this time can also have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the child throughout life.
While in hospital, Burwood caregivers help mothers and babies with sleep, feeding and settling issues. Both parents can learn new skills that will support them in the care of their baby.
Mothers can participate in group sessions in cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment, anxiety management, mindfulness, mothercraft, relaxation, art and therapy, as well as couples groups.
The important role of dads is also considered in the model of care. Dads are encouraged to stay overnight in the hospital to support their partners, while siblings and other family members are welcome to visit and feel comfortable.

This vital support for postnatal depression and other mental health disorders was part of a $16 million redevelopment of St John of God Burwood Hospital that included refurbishment of all private hospital rooms, upgrades to inpatient therapy facilities, and the addition of extra lounge and sitting rooms to enhance recovery.
