Western Australia’s outstanding doctors who service regional communities were recognised at the awards night on 23 March 2019.

Dr Masarei was one of three finalists in the Specialist of the Year (non GP) Award category and was recognised for growing the palliative care service in Bunbury to the holistic service that now extends beyond end of life care.

Dr Masarei cares for acutely unwell patients in Bunbury’s 10 bed acute palliative care unit as well as offering private practice consulting, advice and education to rural GPs, public hospital and community doctors and nursing teams.

She has also supported community based care via outreach clinics and through the use of telehealth into patient homes.

St John of God Bunbury Hospital Acting Chief Executive Officer Maria Noonan said the Bunbury community were extremely fortunate to have such an outstanding medical professional providing palliative care services closer to home.

“Carolyn truly embodies our core values of putting our patients at the heart of what we do," she said.

"Providing compassionate care to our patients and their families during what can be the hardest time of their life comes naturally to Carolyn and we are so proud she has been recognised State-wide as an outstanding regional doctor.”
