It was an incredible honour for Lisa Norman, St John of God Berwick Hospital CEO, to accept an award on behalf of her team for The Best Hospital Development at the 8th annual Australian Healthcare Week Excellence Awards.

“It is an absolute testament to the dedication and hard work of my team. I am so proud to be able to deliver this award back to Berwick and to the people who not only enabled the construction of a wonderful new hospital but delivered excellent community healthcare simultaneously,” Lisa said.

Held at the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australian Healthcare Week is the largest healthcare event in the Southern Hemisphere. The 3 day event brings together clinical, corporate, technology and infrastructure professionals across the entire Australasian healthcare community under one roof.

The judging panel consisted of 5 highly respected industry professionals;

  • Kylie Ward, Chief Executive Officer, Australian College of Nursing
  • Wayne Jones, Chief Executive Officer, Northern NSW Local Health District
  • Nicole Waldron, Executive Director, Epworth Richmond
  • Stephen Ayre, Chief Executive Officer, Metro South Health
  • Fabio Maya, Chief Executive Officer, Sapphire Care

The panel recognised the recently opened St John of God Berwick Hospital for the design, consultation and delivery of a state of the art hospital in the rapidly growing region of eastern Victoria.

Highlighting the community need for increased healthcare facilities, the hospital’s dedication to consultation throughout the entire process shone through the submission.

Caregivers working in specific areas of the hospital were consulted during the design period, providing input into their future work spaces to ensure suitable functionality, while maintaining the strong culture of caregiver engagement and satisfaction. Doctors, consumers, community groups and volunteers were also consulted to ensure that the facility was able to deliver on expectations and meet the needs of all stakeholder groups.

Community engagement was vital and the hospital was recognised for ongoing efforts in involving the community in each stage of the build. This included reaching out to local small businesses, employing over 250 new caregivers from over 4,000 applicants, running competitions, taking community groups on hospital tours, regular newsletters and progress communications as well as a community walk and open day.

While undertaking the incredible workload of building a new hospital, the team was able to achieve their highest ever result and top the St John of God Health Care group bi-annual caregiver satisfaction survey.

“Buildings are important but people are vital to the success. The success of the hospital is defined by the patient experience and clinical outcomes,” Lisa said.
