You initially did a placement with us. How did that experience lead to applying for our graduate program?

Seeing how friendly everyone was to each other and how close all the hospital caregivers were gave me the confidence I needed to apply for the graduate program. During the placement I had a very positive experience with all of the nurses and other caregivers, and being close to home was also beneficial.

Why did you choose the St John of God Health Care graduate program?

I had previously been a patient at St John of God Murdoch Hospital and the care I received proved to me that I wanted to join their wonderful atmosphere and team.

In one sentence, describe your overall experience of our graduate program?

I had a very positive and excellent experience, with a smooth transition from student nurse to registered nurse and I feel I have made tremendous improvements to not only my physical care but overall holistic care.

What would you say are some of the key benefits of doing a graduate program with St John of God Health Care?

Key ones for me are the ongoing education, one-to-one support (physical, mental and emotional), close distance to home and the positive environment.

What feelings did you experience on your first days and weeks of the graduate program and how were you supported through these early stages?

I was very nervous but also excited to put my skills and knowledge to practice. My confidence in my skills was low to begin with but the team around me continued to boost my confidence with continuous feedback and further educational opportunities. Having approachable colleagues definitely allowed me to ask questions and promote new ideas.

What learning were you provided and how did this help you determine your future career path/speciality?

I was provided with learning packages specific to the wards I was allocated to along with basic and more specialised certifications such as basic life support (BLS), manual handling and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line management. Having specific ward based learning packages allowed me to feel more confident to provide appropriate and evidence-based care to my patients.

How has St John of God cared for you so you can care for others?

I have had access to a range of services that not only are there for patients but also to myself. I have had the ability to take care days and it has proven very beneficial for my mental health.
