Since moving into Horizon House Warrnambool in December 2016, Edith (pictured above with Country Fire Authority colleagues) has come a long way towards completing her studies and gaining independence.

The 19-year-old moved into Horizon House at the age of 16 after a family member recommended the service.

“My brothers were previous residents at Horizon House, so I decided to find out more about the program and the caregivers helped me access the service,” she said.

“Horizon House has helped me become a better person. I can live independently and I know I can always ask for help when I need it.”

Edith is a Warrnambool Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteer and is currently completing a Certificate III in Hospitality at TAFE.

She says it’s her passion to help people in need that is behind her drive to improve her skills and knowledge.

“I have been a CFA volunteer for two-and-a-half years and what I love most about it is being able to help people in need and being able to support my community,” Edith said.

She is currently working for McMahon Family Catering and hopes to one day pursue her dream career of working in the police force.

Her message to any young person having issues at home is simple.

“If you are struggling or just having problems with fitting in at home, Horizon House can support you and help to start making you feel at home again,” Edith says.

For young people like Edith, having stable accommodation makes a bright future a real possibility.
