Gynaecological oncology research

We are a leader in local, national and international gynaecologic cancer research encompassing basic science, histopathology, molecular genetics, surgical innovation, peri-operative care, medical oncology, psycho-oncology and survivorship.

Given the large number of patients seeking treatment for gynaecological cancers at St John of God Subiaco Hospital (the hospital treats about half of all Western Australian gynaecological cancer cases), we are well placed to undertake translational research.

  • Gynaecological cancers, including ovarian, endometrial, cervical and uterine cancers, are the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in Australia.
  • Gynaecological cancer research will help improve outcomes and survival rates as well as improve detection, education and quality of life for gynaecologic cancer survivors.
  • Attracting the best clinicians and research scientists to our group will deliver new and improved treatments to patients.
  • Improving quality of life for ovarian cancer survivors, particularly identifying and reducing the effects of cancer and long-term physical and psychological effects of treatment.
  • Individuals at high risk for gynaecological cancers including women who carry BRCA1/2 gene faults and patients with Lynch Syndrome.
  • Early detection of ovarian cancer.
  • Population health studies and epidemiology of gynaecological cancers in Western Australia using data linkage.
  • Treatment of cervical dysplasia (pre-cancerous changes involving the uterine cervix).
  • Genetic alterations in rare gynaecological malignancies as potential targets for novel therapies.
  • Surgical trials.
  • The role of minimally invasive techniques, including robotic-assisted surgery, in the treatment of gynaecological cancers.
We have five clinical trials currently underway.
